Returning to Denmark in daylight

The churchyard · Version 5.14 · 9 October 2026

After the Sea Queen, the return to Denmark opens into a newly built churchyard. Pale daylight, bare trees, distant walls and working sounds give it a different mood from the ramparts. The original graveyard served as inspiration; the playable scene was constructed separately.

The gravedigger has work to do. Burial rope and rosemary give the player reasons to move through the space before the conversation reaches Yorick, memory and mortality. Hamlet and Horatio take part, and the player's remembrance is saved.

Modern-English dialogue trees adapt the wordplay and arguments of Act 5, Scene 1. Questions about who receives burial privileges sit alongside the gravedigger's practical understanding of his trade. The aim is to let the player discover the scene's ideas through a person with an occupation and a point of view.

This chapter currently ends before the funeral confrontation and final duel. Those later events remain future work; the saved remembrance does not yet have a consequence in an unbuilt ending.
