Letting the household listen back
Versions 5.24 and 5.25 · 11 October 2026
Polonius made surveillance physical. He moves between folding screens, listens from cover and becomes defensive when discovered. Hear his complete instruction and the player gains something specific to test against a memorandum. Interrupt it, and the unheard portion is not awarded as a clue.
Pressure can send him to the royal dais to report. Other characters respond after that delivery. Warn Ophelia and she walks farther into the garden to choose a meeting place. Her discussion separates Hamlet's actions from the interpretations others put on them. Reading her private letter still has a cost; a later warning does not erase it.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern also became more present in the courtyard. Distinct civilian clothes replaced their battle-ready appearance. They walk routes, exchange local remarks and acknowledge the player's choices. Quotations and exchanges follow story milestones, so a line belongs to a dramatic moment rather than a timer.
These encounters give the court a useful double meaning. The player is watching other people, and other people can notice the player watching.
